AS3 Performance Weekly Round Up #27

Jonny Walker Continues His 2nd Place Streak

2024 FIM SuperEnduro World Championship, Round 3, Riesa, Germany, 6th January

It was a third P2 in a row for our supported Enduro Pro rider; Jonny Walker, at the weekend. The Overall (P1), yet again, went to Husqvarna's Billy Bolt, even though he injured his leg quite badly in practice. Beta's Walker couldn't quite capitalise on Bolt's injury, narrowly missing out on the overall himself.

Race 1

Walker took the holeshot on his Beta 300 RR but the brave Bolt showed his true grit and overtook him in the matrix section of the track. With Walker knowing Bolt was nursing an injury, the Beta rider went for it, overtaking Bolt and building a big lead. However, this lead began to alarmingly reduce - Walker's rear brake pedal (not an AS3 one!) had folded under his foot peg after hitting an obstacle - Walker was effectively a sitting duck and the crowd roared Bolt past him. There was nothing Walker could do other than hold on and settle for P2. The GasGas of Mitch Brightmore came home in P3, with home hero; KTM's Manuel Lettenbichler, finishing P4.

Race 2

Even with the standard reversed grid start, Beta's Walker powered through the field and was quickly at the front. However, Billy Bolt rode through the pain, putting pressure on Walker throughout the race. With 2 laps to go, Walker unfortunately made a small mistake, crashing and relinquishing the lead,  again, having to settle for P2. Walker would have been nailed on for the win, Huqvarna's Bolt admitting he was lucky to get P1, as he wasn't pushing for it due to his leg pain. Lettenbichler, on his KTM came 3rd, closely followed to the line by his German compatriot; Tim Apolle, taking P4 on his Beta.

Race 3

Billy Bolt probably couldn't believe his luck, going 1,1 in the first two races, with an injury, that probably should have kept him from riding the whole event! He only needed a good result in the final race to get a decent haul of points. Walker, on the other hand ,was a determined man! Probably frustrated with his misfortune and small mistakes, he totally dominated the final race and took P1. Bolt being Bolt, did not hold back - He pushed hard and came 2nd. The KTM of Mani Lettenbichler took his first podium of the SuperEnduro Championship, with 3rd overall - also the first time there has been a non-Englishman on the podium! As we approach half-way in the Championship, Bolt leads Walker by 16 points, with British Beta rider; Will Hoare, still holding on to 3rd Overall, 49 points behind Walker.

Jonny gave his thoughts on Round 3: "I had a couple of unlucky 2nd places tonight... I had a problem with my brake lever and made a lot of mistakes... I just didn't feel good, despite having good pace in practice and Superpole. I really wanted to turn things round for the final race of the night and I was able to do it... I'm really tired but so pleased to have a race win.. Billy was an absolute machine tonight, fair play to him".

Congratulations to our Supported Rider Jonny Walker on another great result and we look forward to seeing how he goes at Round 4 of the 2024 FIM SuperEnduro World Championship, in Cluj, Romania on 20th January.
