Safety Guidelines – Handlebar Risers

Installing handlebar risers is a great way to achieve a more comfortable riding position but when making modifications like this to a motorcycle there are a number of things to take in to consideration to make sure that the motorcycle is safe to ride and all parts are performing as intended. Please read these helpful guidelines and safety tips, and be sure to contact us if you have any questions about your AS3 Performance handlebar risers.

AS3 Performance advise that all products be installed and checked over by a qualified mechanic.

Prior to Installation:

• The vehicle should be suitably parked and secured before any work is carried out.

• Parts should only be installed when the engine is off and the battery is disconnected as per the owner’s manual.

• Allow enough time for the motorcycle to completely cool down, especially the braking system and brake fluid.

During Installation:

• Remove the OEM handlebar pinch bolts by using the tools recommended in the owner’s manual and remove the top half of the handlebar clamps followed by the handlebars.

• Measure the bolts supplied with the handlebar risers against the OEM bolts that you removed. The bolts should be the same length plus the extra length that you are raising the handlebars. For example, if the OEM bolts are 35mm long and you are raising the handlebars by 15mm, you will require 50mm long bolts. Handlebar clamps can vary depending on the type of motorcycle, AS3 Performance handlebar risers come with one set of bolts only (the length is stated in the ‘Will Fit’ section of the product description) If it looks like you require different length bolts, please contact us and we can help you with this.

• Place the AS3 Performance handlebar risers in to the lower half of the handlebar clamps or top yoke (depending on the style of the handlebar clamps on the motorcycle).

• Re-fit the handlebars followed by the top half of the handlebar clamps.

• Align the bolt holes in the handlebar risers and handlebar clamps (AS3 Performance handlebar risers have oval shaped mounting holes to allow fitment on a wider range of models).

• Install the longer bolts supplied with the handlebar risers. Make sure that you check the bolts are long enough to correctly secure the handlebars as mentioned earlier. If you think you require longer bolts do not continue with the installation and contact AS3 Performance to discuss requirements. The bolts should be screwed in to the handlebar clamps or top yoke to the same depth as the OEM bolts that were removed in the first step of the installation process.

• Once the bolts are all finger tight, take the time to set the handlebars to a comfortable position and then tighten all four bolts to the manufacturers recommended torque settings.

After Installation:

• Take the motorcycle on a slow test ride on an even surface after installing the handlebar risers to make sure that everything is functioning correctly, the handlebars are in a safe and comfortable position and nothing is catching on anything or interfering with the steering of the motorcycle.

• Sometimes when installing handlebar risers, you will also need to fit longer cables and brake lines. This is something that we can help with so feel free to contact us and we can discuss your requirements.

• As part of your regular maintenance checks, check and re-tighten the handlebar pinch bolts if required.

When installing the handlebar risers if there looks to be an issue with any of the steps above, do not continue with the installation and contact AS3 Performance for advice.
